Their fur is soft and extremely dense with up to 60 hairs in one follicle. They are sexually dimorphic meaning the males and females look different. Females also weigh more than males.

In the wild: Grass and seed
At the Zoo: Chopped alfalfa, and Mazuri chinchilla pellet
Habitat
Semi-arid, mountainous areas, rocky crevices and burrows
